Susan Crumpacker Brown is a 1963 (BA) graduate of University of Michigan where she met
and married her husband from Kalamazoo, a former captain of the Michigan football team
Robert M. Brown (1962). They have four children (two of whom graduated from the
University of Michigan) and six grandchildren.
There is a long history of public service in the Brown and
Crumpacker (from Indiana)
families that includes State and National political positions. Bob's father, Robert
Brown served as a member of the University Board of Regents and was All American and captain
of the 1925 football team.
As a multi-generational family of University of Michigan graduates Susan Brown has a deep
abiding love for the University and has served in many different capacities over the past 25
years.
In 1998 she was awarded the Presidential Societies Service citation for the extraordinary energy
and effort she contributed to the campaign for Michigan as a co-chairperson of the National Michigan
Annual Fund. She has served on the President's advisory Board and is currently on the Boards
of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and Ford School of Public Policy. She is
a proud lifetime member of the Alumni Association.
In addition to her service to her Alma Mater she has been highly involved as a volunteer in the
Kalamazoo community. She has served as a Trustee of Kalamazoo College and was a successful
fundraiser for the area public schools. Susan was the founder and President of the Kalamazoo
Historic Conservancy for the Preservation of Art and remains involved in the education based Monroe
Brown Foundation. She is a member of the Women's Council, the Junior League and the First
Presbyterian Church. She owns and runs her own interior design company.
Her political experiences began as a conservative Goldwater Republican and since have included
the campaigns of Ford, Quayle, Reagan, Bush, Bush, Abraham, and Engler. She is a member of
the Kalamazoo Republican Party, Michigan Republican Party, Citizens for Traditional Values, Right to
Life, and is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment.
Michigan Republican Party leaders persuaded Susan to run for the University Board of Regents.
She is considered to be an excellent candidate because of her solid experience in education, her strong conservative ideology, and her long-lasting ties to the University of Michigan.
